Riley: Families should get surplus

Posted by ALmod on December 13, 2005

Well, I’m all for paying less in taxes, but this is the very same problem that I had with the Bush tax cuts. Just because we have a surplus in tax dollars doesn’t mean that the money isn’t needed. Neither does it mean that it won’t be needed in the near future. I know that his intentions are good, but my suggestion to the governor would be to wait a few years, build up an “emergency fund” for the state, and then if there is still a surplus, you then consider gradual cuts and appropriate budget cuts.

But I doubt that there is as much of a surplus as the governor implies. Perhaps we should use some of that surplus to spend more on teachers, schools, and students in Alabama, because they do desperately need it. But this time, let’s make sure that the money gets to where it is needed.
