Put Your Money Where Your Need Is

Posted by ALmod on March 8, 2006

“We have enough money. Really.”

When was the last time you heard a politician say that? It almost sounds like something from a dream. Governor Riley didn’t exactly say that in a meeting with the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee yesterday, but he came close.

Actually, what he’s asking for is smart budgeting from Congress. Riley explained that Alabama has enough money to cover expenses from real estate losses due to Hurricane Katrina. However, if additional funds are to be given to our state, he would like to be able to use them for other hurricane-related expenses, like improving evacuation routes and expenses associated with taking in evacuees.

Riley also asked that the committee not spend too much on Alabama regarding terrorism while spending too little natural disasters.

“I don’t know if a terrorist will ever attack Alabama; we know a hurricane will. If we don’t have the ability to factor natural disasters in, all of us in these Gulf Coast states will be at a disadvantage,” Riley testified.

Bravo, Mr. Riley. Bravo.
