Something to do during your free time

Posted by ALmod on November 22, 2006

Go and stand around a funeral to make sure that the families of the deceased can mourn in peace. It turns out that Fred Phelps and his gang of goons have decided to protest at the funerals for the children who died in Huntsville’s bus crash.

Here is the article from the Huntsville Times.

Thankfully, Alabama has a new law that does not allow protesting within (I believe) 500 feet of the funeral events. This law was actually created in response to Phelps and his group, who have chosen to protest at the funerals of our fallen soldiers, cheering for their deaths and saying that it is God’s response to homosexuality. In fact, they blame pretty much everything on homosexuality.

Term Limits, Shmerm Limits

Posted by ALmod on November 22, 2006

Customers of the Birmingham Water Works should be ticked right now. I’m not talking about being just a little bit ticked, either. Those living within the area are familiar with absurd rate hikes, over-the-top spending, and board members receiving nearly $250 for every meeting (and I mean every meeting). In fact, they’re about to push through yet another rate hike to a group that already pays some of the highest utility rates in the country.

It is with good reason that members of the Birmingham Water Works Board have term limits. So why is the Birmingham City Council declaring “extreme circumstances” so that they can break those rules and reappoint Anthony Barnes as chairman?

What exactly are these “extreme circumstances” that keep the council from instead appointing one of the many potentials that were set up to be interviewed for the job? Birmingham voters should argue “extreme circumstances” at the ballot when these council members are up for re-election.

Fiscal Conservative: FOUND!

Posted by ALmod on November 22, 2006

In Jefferson County, of all places.

Bettye Fine Collins is showing her Republican red, and it’s the conservative Alabama Republican red. Granted, I’m sure that Jefferson County is still miffed at her for letting Red Diamond slip through their fingers, but Larry Langford’s “tax and spend Democrat” act was getting very, very old.

A Rotten Egg From Any Other Chicken

Posted by ALmod on November 22, 2006

…Smells just as bad. Christian Action Alabama, formerly known as the Christian Coalition of Alabama, is saying goodbye to it’s leader John Giles. Or rather, Giles is saying goodbye to CAA.

“It’s time for a fresh face,” Giles said.

Probably because people in Alabama know that the current face is one of a sleazeball– and I apologize to sleazeballs everywhere for the insult. Giles and his group are so out of touch with actual Christians that they ought to label themselves “Right-wing Nutjobs of Alabama”. After all, these were the people who said that an organization started by Pat Robertson was too liberal for them.

The usual crowd, like Hank “Katrina-is-God’s-vengeance” Erwin, are already lamenting Giles’s departure, but I’m thinking that the rest of this state couldn’t be happier to see him go. Now if we could only get rid of the rest of his group and replace it with one that really does represent the beliefs and values of Christians.
