Silly String’s Other Uses

Posted by ALmod on December 8, 2006

I meant to post this last night, but I had to go to my church’s Christmas musical rehearsal, so I ran out of time.

Turns out that our men and women in uniform have found an interesting use for Silly String:

Before entering a building, troops squirt the plastic goo, which can shoot strands about 10 to 12 feet, across the room. If it falls to the ground, no trip wires. If it hangs in the air, they know they have a problem. The wires are otherwise nearly invisible.

Cool! What’s even better is that the makers of Silly String have offered to donate some to our troops. Some other useful ways to use everyday items:

  • Tampons are used to temporarily plug bullet holes in wounded soldiers.
  • Condoms are placed over rifle muzzles to keep out sand.

Plugging wounds with tampons is quite an advance from the days of using cobwebs. I don’t know how long condoms have been used on the barrels of weapons but I know we did it back in the early 50’s. It was common to be ordered to do something without having the proper tools and being told to improvise, and resourceful G.I.s usually came up with something to get the job done.

I might add that now when guys pack condoms for hunting trips maybe their wives won’t be so suspicious.
