APRIL FOOLS! Mardi Gras 2008 to be MOVED

Posted by ALmod on April 1, 2007

I just got a tip from a Press Register reporter who was kind enough to wake me up early this morning. Usually, she’s quite considerate, but there’s a first time for everything. (April, don’t think I’m forgiving you just yet. You SO owe me on this one.) This should appear in their Monday print edition, since the story did not make the Sunday deadline. I am urging you to contact your legislator regarding this very important issue.

As you might be aware, there has been an issue with the 2008 Alabama primaries in that they fall on Fat Tuesday. Mobile legislators and others were unsuccessful in having the primary moved to another date. It was recently decided that they would instead accept absentee ballots and early voting as an alternative. However, several voter fraud groups have pointed out that these methods may still leave some voters affected and could result in increased voter fraud.

For these reasons, some legislators (some not even belonging to the affected areas) are planning to instead move Mardi Gras celebrations to Tuesday, February 12, 2008. This is the week after Fat Tuesday, when many will already be celebrating Lent. This could be devestating to local businesses who depend on tourism during this time! This will be priority legislation to be introduced in the House first thing Monday morning. Sen. Orr has a similar bill to be introduced in the Senate at the same time the House bill is being discussed, so please contact your legislators today to make sure your voice is heard. The bills are HB44 and SB11.

The list of legislators (including one senator) who are promoting this move is as follows:

Rep. Gerald Allen (R-62); Rep. Arthur Payne (R-44); Rep. John Robinson (D-23); Rep. Tammy Irons (D-1); Rep. Richard Laird (D-37); Rep. Joe Faust (R-94); Rep. Jeremy Oden (R-11); Sen. Arthur Orr (R-3); Rep. John “Jody” Letson (D-7); Rep. Yusuf Salaam (D-67)

UPDATE: Birmingham Blues has linked to this post with “Moving Mardi Gras“.

UPDATE: Between the Links has linked to this post with “Mardi Gras Rescheduled“.

UPDATE: Make sure you read the first letter of the last name of each legislator. April Fools! In an interesting twist of April Fools Day karma, someone doing DoS attacks slowed everything down to the point where I couldn’t post it until this morning. I guess hackers enjoy their pranks as well.

Don’t forget that this was originally Governor Ralph “Shorty” Price’s idea.

Mardi Gras the week after Fat Tuesday is like Christmas in January. Why don’t we just go ahead and move Halloween to November 17th and Thanksgiving to August (which needs a good holiday!) Why are we locked in to all these archaic dates? Let’s change it up every year and schedule holidays whenever we feel like it, regardless of religious observances or tradition!
